Frustrated the entire time I used it August 31, 2010 cglikesthegnar I bought this scanner in the beginning of 2010.
br /It makes great scans of black and white 35mm negatives. I haven't tried black and white 120 negatives, but I assume it's the same thing.
br /As far as color goes -- not the best, at all. No, let me correct that: it will make good color scans if your exposure was correct and if the film was developed correctly. But even then, the colors are usually seriously off and needs to be corrected with software. Sometimes the colors are so off that the image is not even useable. Also sometimes I have to scan more than once because the scanner cannot even pick up the negative. At first I thought it was just me not using the scanner correctly; but I WAS using it correctly. It's jut a terrible scanner.
br /But now after just living with these frustrations, it won't even power on. It's completely dead. It sits on my computer table and hasn't been dropped, I don't know what's wrong with it and I am so angry that I have to buy a new scanner. It's not even worth fixing or sending back.
br /I'm not expecting perfection, but a little consistency. $130 is not much to a lot of people, but it is to poor college students like me.
br /I'm now saving up my money to buy a better scanner.
love my epson July 24, 2010 Paula Evans (TEXARKANA, AR, US) I received my Epson scanner within two days of order. It is wonderful, very easy to use, and excellent quality. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a user-friendly, high-quality scanner for the price.
Really Handy! July 22, 2010 Sher This scanner is really easy to use and make picture perfect copies. I should have bought it long ago!
Best cheap film scanner July 19, 2010 Anonymous 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a color and black and white photographer and do-it-yourself developer. I recently purchased this scanner as my old CanoScan could not handle my film and has limited software.

br /Pros:
br /
br /- Probably as much DPI as you would need: 4800 dpi hardware, 12000+ with interpolation (3200 dpi on 35mm produces ~4000X3000 pixel images, around 12 megapixels, with medium format you can get the same with lower dpi)
br /- Digital ICE, which can help eliminate dust, but not water spots (makes scanning take 5-6 times as long though)
br /- Good image quality
br /- Very inexpensive
br /- 12 35mm frames per scan
br /- Decent software compared to other scanners, auto separates photos, auto normalizes, etc
br /- 16-bits per channel option, can save as .tif
br /
br /Cons:
br /
br /- It came with one tiny speck of dust underneath scanner glass. This same shape of dust shows up over and over again on negative images as bright white, but it can be clone brushed out - this is the biggest issue I've had with this scanner, they should be more careful at the factory, but it is a small speck so nothing major
br /- Scanning is a bit slow (1 minute per 35mm frame at 3200 dpi, 5 or 6 minutes per same frame if ICE is on)
br /- If the film has a bend to it and touches scanner glass, you have to turn it over or it will get aberrations called Newton's rings - they recommend scanning with emulsion side up but this is not always possible due to this
br /- Can only scan 2 medium format images per scan, and the software sometimes messes up the thumbnailing of these which requires turning thumbnailing off and manually making cropping rectangles - not a huge deal but could be improved
br /- Software auto-checkmarks unsharp mask when you scan things, you're required to un-check it each time if you want unaltered images, but this is easy
br /- Software doesn't have an option to save as .png
br /
br /I would recommend this scanner.

I missed the window for getting a full refund, otherwise I would have returned this scannar. It does terrible work with color film scanning is poor. Epson software is pretty much worthless.
